A sensational one ¨ two round finish by the two SsangYong / Aircom Systems LCR Suzuki's at the penultimate round has now set the scene for one of the closest title chases in the history of the Aircom Systems Australian Sidecar Championship when the series draws to a close at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway on November 19.
Queenslander Stacey Sellar and Kiwi passenger Darren Abrahams emerged victorious from the fourth round of the series which was held at Victoria's Winton Motor Raceway over the weekend, October 21-22.
Two wins and a second gave the pair the round win ahead of teammate and current championship point's leader Victorian Adam Treasure and Sydney based passenger Lionel Cornwell who rode fast and consistently to score a pair of seconds and a third.
The round provided teams and fans alike with some of the closest hard fought racing the category has seen in recent years.
The sidecar teams arrived at Winton after a four month layoff in the series with 18-points separating Treasure from third placed Sellar, with former World Championship competitor Shane Soutar splitting the pair just two points shy of Treasure.
The closeness of the championship has seen the performance of all involved lift, as they strive to gain the upper hand. Soutar claimed pole in qualifying with Sellar alongside, while Treasure was on the third row with the sixth fastest time. The scene was set for frantic racing and the teams obliged.
Sellar struck first, taking the race win by 5.4 seconds from Treasure and went on to repeat the result in the second albeit by a shorter margin of 3.9 seconds after the second nine lapper. Looking to make it a clean sweep of victories Sellar pushed too hard in the opening stanza of the final race and ran off the circuit losing a number of places and time. The race however was stopped soon after when an incident involving Terry Goldie / Mark Schafter brought out the red flags. With a deficit of eleven seconds to make up on Soutar on combined times, Sellar rode the wheels off his SsangYong LCR in the shortened 6-lap sprint taking the checkered flag on the track but when the times were combined was credited with second overall behind Soutar and ahead of Treasure.
The one ¨ two finish was the third such result for the team, again highlighting the improvements the team has made during the season and showed they have all learned from having former World Champion Steve Abbott as part of the crew in 2005.
The level of performance has not been restricted to the SsangYong / Aircom Systems team as no fewer than six rider pairings were under the existing lap record for the Winton circuit with Sellar etching his name in the record books with the new mark now set at 1:30.088 set in race two.
Adam Treasure / Lionel Cornwell (#38)
"We came here with a two point lead in the championship and leave with five, so you have to be happy with that. We haven't had close racing like we had here for a long time. It was great to be a part of. The three of us were close all weekend. With our season having a four month break in it we were able to come out here are do couple of local race meetings which kept us in touch with what we had to do and it has proven to be an essential part in helping us this weekend. We felt comfortable arriving here, but we still need to sharpen our act up in qualifying as we need to get a better starting position so that we aren't chasing from the start as we have been. We head to Eastern Creek feeling somewhat confident as we feel the track suits us a lot better so we're looking forward to it."
Stacey Sellar / Darren Abrahams (#37)
"Like everyone else it's been a while since we've been on the bike in anger so it's all worked out well for us. The team is working very well together at the moment. We feel we have got on top of the set up characteristics needed to get this bike to run fast and are a lot more comfortable with the whole package which is allowing us to push harder from this point on. We're in a positive mood heading to the final round knowing we can win races as we've done here. We might be behind by six points, but we'll be charging hard there that's for sure. Our goal this weekend was to close up the margins between us and the lead pair and we've been able to do that. We missed the chance of making it three race wins for the round after I mucked up the final race with a brake lock up that cost us a lot of time, but we recovered well to finish second. We got the round win that was special for us and the team, so it's all set up for the final at Eastern Creek."
Brett Gilbert ¨ Team Manager
"I'm proud both riders rode extremely well this weekend. They are both in the hunt for the championship with the pair split by six points, plus we have Shane (Soutar) in there as well which makes it all very exciting for the class. Our obvious aim now is to finish the season off with a SsangYong one ¨ two after the final round. Both Adam and Stacey have come on in leaps and bounds as the season has progressed as the results show. Adam has been the quiet achiever for us. He knows what he has to do and he's been doing it. He came here with a two point lead and leaves with five putting himself in a strong position for the championship. Stacey has come into the team and had to learn a lot about the bike and he's now on top of that as we can see by the results here at Winton. He was 18-points behind when he arrived here and has trimmed that down to six, so it's all shaping up nicely. The quality of the racing has been excellent this weekend. There may have not have been as many teams as we would have liked, but the racing has been superb, not only from the top three in the series, but also a number of the other pairings who rode extremely well this weekend. A great sign that the level of performance has lifted significantly in the class."
