Holland digs deep for front row start but Stauffer stellar at Winton

Jamie Stauffer Winton Raceway 2006

Yamaha's Jamie Stauffer has maintained his amazing run of pole positions, adding the top grid position for tomorrow's two Superbike races at Winton to his enviable season tally.

As at round 6 of the 7 round YMF Loan Australian Superbike Championship, Stauffer has taken every pole position, a feat reflected by his spot at the top of the points table.

His Friday form continued over to today, and he cut to the chase early, setting his quick lap in the morning session and only completing a handful of laps before circulating in solidly in race simulation.

As well as bragging rights, the pole position also awards Stauffer an extra point, which could be crucial in the final round at Eastern Creek.

"We did the whole session this afternoon on the one tyre, there wasn't really a need to go out on a qualifier (tyre) and we had a number of options to play with" said Stauffer.

"The tyre is the hardest one we had to use out there and seems as though it will definitely go the distance, as usual the Dunlops are spot on and the Yamaha is working very well too."

"We had almost 2 seconds on the field yesterday, and kept up the push today, the team has worked very hard at this all year and will continue to this weekend and into the last round."

Maintaining his impressive form at the pointy-end of the proceedings was Team Yoshimura Suzuki's Robbie Bugden, backing up a solid 2nd yesterday to again finish 2nd in combined qualifying.

Bugden closed the gap to Stauffer dramatically in the second session, with the team making some positive changes to his bike during the pit stops to extract the extra pace.

"I'm very happy with the way the bike is going, the Dunlop tyre coupled with the Suzuki is a great package, we made a few adjustments there in the first session and it certainly brought the bike forward a long way," said Bugden.

"A big thanks has to go out to Phil (Tainton) and all the team here for giving me a great bike and hopefully tomorrow we can close that gap to Jamie a bit more and make a good race of it."

"Last year I finished second overall here and there's only one position I'd be happy with this weekend and that's the win, we've got our work cut out for us but we'll definitely look to make it a good show."

Leading privateer rider and Honda standout Russell Holland has endured a painful start to his weekend, nursing an injured shoulder and feeling the effects of a recent operation while chasing down Stauffer for the championship lead.

Holland put his head down and produced an amazing display of resilience today, chipping away at a quick time before a last burst of effort saw him elevated to the front row of the grid for tomorrow's races.

Finding extra focus for the impressive qualifying effort today, he remains realistic at his chances tomorrow and knows the importance of lapping consistently to collect much-needed points.

"I'm very happy to be on the front row, it's a little bit of a consolation prize because we can't be completely competitive this weekend, but if we can get as many points as we can it will be good," said Holland.

"As usual, everything is working well, I'm just not fully fit for this round ¬ our tyres are fantastic, I think the Pirelli will be another very good race tyre and the Honda is working well."

"I think we can still have a strong couple of races tomorrow, its just about being as consistent as we can, I've got a really good team behind me and if we can come away at the front end of the field tomorrow I'd be very happy with that."

Making up the 4th and final position on tomorrow's front row will be Team Yoshimura Suzuki's Shawn Giles, who, like teammate Robbie Bugden, replicated his practice position from yesterday.

Giles is also recovering from a lengthy recess from competitive racing and his amazing ability to spring back to form in such a short amount of time has had the paddock talking.

Kawasaki Supersport regular Josh Waters returns to the front line for 'Team Green' this weekend, taking over Superbike duties for teammate Shannon Johnson who was injured in a cycling accident just over a week ago.

Waters will campaign both bikes for the factory Kawasaki team, and will start from positions 7th and 8th in Superbike and Supersport respectively.
