Superbike title chase tightens as penultimate Winton round approaches

With just two pointscoring rounds remaining in the 2006 YMF Loan Australian Superbike Championship, the chase for valuable championship points is well and truly underway.

Riders and teams alike will set their collective racing mindset to ļAttack Mode' as they prepare for the premier motorcycle series' penultimate meeting at Winton Motor Raceway on October 20-22.

Throughout the championship's competitive classes, a large number of riders are locked in battle with their rivals, striving for the critical extra points to elevate them in their personal campaigns.

The challenge is highlighted by the top of the table clash in the YMF Loan Australian Superbike Championship, as Yamaha's Jamie Stauffer and Honda's Russell Holland continue to engage in the see-sawing battle which was ignited back in April when the season got underway.

Between them, the pair has shared every round and race victory, and all indications suggest this epic showdown will carry over as the seven-round series stops over at Winton.

18 points is all that separates the two New South Wales-based riders, and with 51 points on offer at round 6 and a further 51 points up for grabs at round 7, the title fight is sure to go down to the wire.

While Stauffer holds a comfortable lead in the Supersport class, the scrap for points and positions that boils below him on the table is nothing short of intense, with a flurry of Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki riders all vying for a better championship berth.

Joe Rocket Honda's Glenn Allerton assumed 2nd place in the class after a consistent run at Symmons Plains, but sitting shy of him by a margin of just over 10 points is the trio of Yamaha pilots, Mark Aitchison, Jason O'Halloran and previous round winner Jeremy Crowe.

The gap between 2nd and 8th on the ladder is an amazing 26 points, ensuring racegoers will be treated to some of the closest motorcycle racing they have ever witnessed at the Winton round as the 600cc class resumes this extensive duel.

While the capacity of the 125GP machine may not match up to a 1000cc Superbike, the racing and personality of the class is still larger than life, and a number of riders are still in the running to claim honours in the 2006 AMCN Australian 125cc Grand Prix Championship.

West Australian Tom Hatton currently leads the charge, but his campaign is being kept honest by Tasmanian Brett Simmonds who lies just 12 points in arrears as the season approaches its dramatic conclusion.

Support class championship candidates Jon Cartwright, Ian Andrews, Craig McMartin and Michael Fraser hold comfortable leads in the NakedBike, Superstock, Pro-Twins and FormulaXtreme fields respectively as preparations for Winton continue.

As always, the event is sure to produce an array of spectacular racing throughout the fields in every class, with the rural Victorian circuit on the outskirts of Benalla set to test the mettle of each and every rider.

Fans can catch all the action as the round gets underway in just under a month, and the YMF Loan Australian Superbike Championship offers everyone an opportunity to attend with the best value tickets of any premier class motorsport series in the country.
